Best time to trade forex after work: evening and early-morning sessions in Eastern Time

Best Time to Trade Forex After Work (ET Session Times, With DST)

For most US workers, the best time to trade forex after work is the Tokyo open. That is 8 PM ET through October 31, 2026, and 7 PM ET from November 1. If you can wake early instead, 6 to 9 AM ET puts you inside the London session.

Those two windows are not equal, so this guide shows what is open in each one and what tends to move. It also covers how daylight saving time (DST) moves the evening sessions by an hour in Eastern Time (ET).

Key takeaways

  • After 5 PM ET, the open sessions are Sydney, Tokyo, Singapore and Hong Kong, so yen and Australian dollar pairs are the natural focus.
  • Before 9 AM ET, London is open, and the UK handled about 38% of global FX turnover in April 2025.
  • US clocks fall back on November 1, 2026, so Tokyo opens at 7 PM ET instead of 8 PM ET.

The best time to trade forex after work: the Tokyo open

The best time to trade forex after work is the first two to three hours after Tokyo opens. That means 8 PM to 10 PM ET until October 31, then 7 PM to 10 PM ET. Singapore and Hong Kong join an hour later, so Asian trading builds through your evening.

Which forex sessions fall after 5 PM and before 9 AM ET

A session is the business day of a major financial center. Session boundaries are conventions, so treat the times below as approximate.

We convert local hours into ET, using 7 AM to 4 PM in Sydney and 9 AM to 6 PM in Tokyo. Singapore and Hong Kong use 9 AM to 5 PM, while London and New York use 8 AM to 5 PM.

London3 AM to 12 PM4 AM to 1 PM3 AM to 12 PM
New York8 AM to 5 PM8 AM to 5 PM8 AM to 5 PM

Here is why the times move. US DST runs from March 8 to November 1, 2026, according to NIST, while UK clocks go back on October 25. Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong do not change their clocks, so their ET times shift only when US clocks do.

Sydney moves the other way, because its summer starts in October. As a result, Sydney opens at 5 PM ET until October 3, then 4 PM ET, then 3 PM ET from November 1. For a full breakdown, see our guide to forex market hours.

Why the hour matters: where forex trading actually happens

Turnover is the total value traded, and it is not spread evenly around the clock. According to the BIS Triennial Survey, global FX trading reached $9.6 trillion per day in April 2025. The US dollar was on one side of 89% of all trades.

Bar chart of global FX turnover share by center in April 2025: UK 38%, US 19%, Singapore 11.8%, Hong Kong 7%

The BIS detailed results put the UK at about 38% and the US at about 19%. Singapore had 11.8% and Hong Kong 7.0%. So the two Asian hubs that trade during your evening add up to 18.8%, about the same as the US alone.

In practice, this shapes what moves. Evening hours in ET suit pairs tied to Asia and the Pacific, such as USD/JPY, AUD/USD and AUD/JPY. By contrast, EUR/USD and GBP/USD often trade in narrower ranges until London opens, so watch them in the morning window.

How to find your best time to trade forex after work

Step 1: Map your best time to trade forex after work

List the hours you can reliably protect on weekdays, for example 8 PM to 10 PM. Then match them against the session table above. If they overlap an open session by less than one hour, the morning window may fit you better.

Step 2: Pick pairs that are active in that window

A currency pair is two currencies priced against each other, such as USD/JPY. For evening sessions, focus on one or two yen or Australian dollar pairs. Our guide to forex currency pairs explains how each pair behaves.

Step 3: Check the calendar for your window

Scheduled news can move price fast. For example, the BLS jobs report comes out at 8:30 AM ET, inside the morning window. Likewise, check for Japanese and Australian releases before you trade the evening.

Step 4: Size the trade at 1% risk

A pip on yen pairs is 0.01, not 0.0001. Because the yen is the quote currency, the pip value in dollars depends on the price. Our guide on how to calculate pip value covers every pair type.

USD/JPY pip value per standard lot = (0.01 × 100,000) ÷ USD/JPY price

Example: say you have a $2,000 account and plan to trade USD/JPY after work. The Federal Reserve H.10 release lists USD/JPY at 157.18 on September 25, 2026. You plan a buy at 157.18 with a stop at 156.93 (25 pips) and a target at 157.68 (50 pips).

  1. Dollar risk: $2,000 × 1% = $20.
  2. Pip value: (0.01 × 100,000) ÷ 157.18 = $6.36 per standard lot.
  3. Lot size: $20 ÷ (25 × $6.36) = 0.126 lots, so you round down to 0.12 lots.
  4. Result: about $19.09 lost if the stop is hit, or about $38.17 gained at the target.

For details on sizing, read how much to risk per trade. Spreads and your broker’s live price will change these figures slightly.

Step 5: Set a hard stop time for yourself

Evening trading competes with sleep, and you still work at 9 AM. So pick a cutoff, such as 10:30 PM ET, and leave any open trade on its stop loss and take-profit orders.

Five mistakes when trading forex after work

  1. Trading EUR/USD at 9 PM because it is familiar. Instead, trade the pairs whose home markets are open.
  2. Forgetting the DST shift. Tokyo opens an hour earlier in ET from November 1, so recheck your alarms.
  3. Staying up for one more setup. Tired decisions cost money, so stop at your cutoff time.
  4. Trading right at the daily close. Many brokers roll over positions around 5 PM ET, and spreads can widen then. Check your broker’s rollover time.
  5. Sizing bigger because the session feels slow. A quiet market can still move against you, so keep 1% risk.

Build your after-work trading routine

Here is a sample weekday routine for the evening window, starting at 7:30 PM ET. First, review the daily chart and the calendar for 15 minutes. Next, trade or set orders from 8:00 to 10:00 PM, then journal for 15 minutes and stop by 10:30 PM.

Write these times into your trading plan so they are rules, not moods. For the full weekly schedule, see how to trade forex with a full-time job.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Asian session a bad time to trade?

No, but it suits certain pairs. Singapore and Hong Kong together handled 18.8% of global FX turnover in April 2025. Trade the yen and Australian dollar pairs, not every pair on your screen.

Is morning or evening the best time to trade forex after work?

Morning puts you in London, the largest center, but it means trading before your commute. Evening is easier to protect for most people. Pick the window you can repeat five days a week.

Can I trade forex on weekends?

The main sessions are closed from the New York close on Friday until Sydney opens on Sunday afternoon ET. Check your broker’s Sunday open time, and use weekends to review your trades instead.

Do I need to change my schedule for DST?

Yes. In 2026, the shifts fall on October 4 for Sydney, October 25 for London and November 1 for the US. Next year, US clocks spring forward on March 14, 2027, and UK clocks on March 28, 2027.

The best time to trade forex after work: the bottom line

The best time to trade forex after work is the Tokyo open, 8 PM ET through October 31 and 7 PM ET from November 1. If you are an early riser, London from 6 to 9 AM ET is the stronger session. Either way, pick one window, trade the pairs that are active in it, and size every trade at 1% risk.
